Member of the national committee of CPPCC Yang Changfeng: Beidou System Is Capable of Competing with International Advanced Navigation Systems
“By 2020 when the global Beidou Navigation Satellite System is completed, both its precision and system will have been world-class, capable of competing with several major advanced navigation systems in the world” Yang Changfeng, member of the national committee of CPPCC and General Designer of the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (Beidou), said in an interview. He was quite confident while talking about Beidou.
According to Yang, “innovation” is the word to define the whole process of the development of Beidou. The first generation of BaiDou Navigation Satellite System, an independent navigation system consisting of only a few satellites, was developed during a time when China was financially weak; some innovations were carried out when the second generation was being developed, in which three kinds of orbit were combined to form a full-time satellite navigation networking system to benefit China as well as Asia; the third generation is innovated on the above-mentioned basis with application of technology of inter-satellite link, with the help of which a global networking system will be formed by 2020.
Benefits generated from Beidou for our life are beyond our imagination. Take sharing bicycles for example. For a better management of sharing bicycles, electronic fences are used, the use of which exactly relies on the Beidou Navigation Satellite System.
Yang Changfeng said: “After Beidou is put into use, both elderly people and children are provided with a means to guarantee their safety. Electronic monitoring system can be applied for the health care service of elderly people by locating their positions once they are out of the room; and with the help of electronic monitoring system based on satellite navigation, children in primary schools or kindergartens can be under real-time surveillance.”
As for BaiDou’s development in the future, Yang pointed out that our country is now studying the feasibility of PNT (positioning, navigation, and timing) system. PNT actually refers to the time and space available for the integration of earth, sea, air and space as well as for the seamless link between indoor and outdoor. No matter where you are in the world, you can enjoy the service provided by PNT system. This is a target in 2035, and also a specific embodiment of the fulfillment of the Space Dream or the dream of building China into a strong nation.
“Spirit” is a word frequently mentioned by Yang in the interview. According to him, the Beidou Spirit and the scientific spirit are of the same origin.
“They consist of several same elements. The first is the spirit of innovation, which is also the target pursued by Beidou people during Beidou’s development; the second is a serious attitude towards work. For instance, it usually takes 8 to 10 years for Beidou to leap from one stage to a higher one, during which all Beidou need to work diligently without complaining as they may not have access to the National Scientific and Technological Award nor are their wages raised. But all those people are devoting themselves to the cause of Beidou; the third is the spirit of solidarity and cooperation. Nearly 100,000 staff work on the third generation of Beidou and a total of 300 research institutes is also involved. This huge system cannot work systematically without the spirit of solidarity and cooperation; the last one is the spirit of achieving excellence. No matter what we do and what products we are making, we are trying to be excellent. This is the spirit of Beidou people and, I think, also the spirit of scientists.” Yang said.
