Representative of the 19th CPC National Congress Hu Weiwu: dozens of projects of national importance, Beidou included, have applied Loongson
On the morning of October 24th, the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China came to a successful close at the Great Hall of the People. Part of the representatives of the just concluded session walked out of the hall and participated in the "Party Representative Channel" activities to be interviewed by journalists both from home and abroad.
At noon, Hu Weiwu, researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, indicated while receiving interview in the "Party Representative Channel" activities that the performance of Loongson had surpassed the mainstream low-end CPU series products in other countries and that it would approach the level of medium and high-end products in 2020.
Hu Weiwu pointed out that Loongson had taken a critical step to move out of the ivory tower of CAS and march towards the market, including the national strategic security market and the open market, ever since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
Currently Loongson has been applied in dozens of projects of national significance, including the Beidou satellite. It has been utilized in information systems in the Party and government offices. What's more, it has gone global and realized the transition from being basically usable to usable.
"It has been seventeen years since I first engage in Loongson. I'm convinced that we will have our own technological platform, including CPU and operating system after three decades of persistence. This will underpin the development of our country's information industry and industry informatization and promote our information industry to move up to the medium and high-end part of the value chain." Hu said.
Hu Weiwu, chief scientist of Loongson: the performance of Loongson CPU is approaching medium and high-end level internationally
On October 24th, in the third activity of the "Party Representative Channel" of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Hu Weiwu, researcher of Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief scientist of Loongson CPU, noted while answering the questions of Science and Technology Daily that by 2020 the performance of Loongson CPU would have approached the level of medium and high-end products internationally.
The reporter asked, "We know that it has been sixteen years since the start of research and development of Loongson. As a domestic CPU, Loongson has been accompanied by doubt since its inception. As a person in charge of the development process, could you please elaborate on the competitiveness of Loongson in the world? What's more, what's the significance of the research and development of Loongson in building China into a cyberpower and a digital power?"
Hu said, "People will doubt our ability once we touch upon two things. One is engine, the heart to the industry. The other is central processing unit, or CPU, the heart to information industry. We are still controlled by other countries in terms of the two things, which are also typical products of uneven and inadequate development. Ever since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Loongson has taken a critical step to move out of the ivory tower of CAS and march towards the market, including national strategic security market and open market. Currently Loongson has been applied in dozens of projects of national significance, including the Beidou satellite. It has been utilized in information systems in the Party and government offices. What's more, it has gone global and realized the transition from being basically usable to usable. The Loongson Company, as the main body of the industrialization of Loongson, has witnessed rapid increase in either sales revenue or profits. As for the performance of Loongson, now it's safe to say that its performance has surpassed mainstream low-end CPU series products in other countries and is now approaching the medium and high-end level.
CPU research and development is a capital-intensive industry. Currently the National Integrated Circuit Investment Fund enters Loongson, which will promote the development of Loongson. I'm convinced that its performance will approach that of medium and high-end products in the world by 2020.
When it comes to competitiveness, the comparison between us and foreign giants like Intel is like that between the Red Army and the Kuomintang Army during the Jinggang Mountain Period. What we can do is merely forge a new path, which means we encourage no direct confrontation with other competitors. The purpose of Loongson is to establish a new ecosystem. Just like Apple which owns its separate system and on one will ask what the performance of Apple is like in comparison with Intel. During the past years much progress has been made in the development of the ecosystem of Loongson itself, which now includes hundreds of enterprises and tens of thousands of scientific researchers.
Based on our ecological construction during the past years, we have had a profound lesson that, as long as we connect technology chain and optimize our system, we can ensure the overall performance of our equipment is superior to foreign systems even if every part of our system is inferior. The criterion of advanced technology is not whether it follows Americans closely, but whether we can combine technology and application closely. There are many cases where the performance experience of Loongson users surpasses many mainstream products in the market.
In terms of the role of being a sci-tech power, I want to cite the remarks of President Xi at the Central Cyberspace Security and Informatization Symposium on April 19th, 2016. President Xi noted that the core technology of the Internet was our largest "life-gate" and the control of our core technology by other countries was the biggest "hazard" . In order to remove the "life-gate" and "hazard", we should not only roll our sleeves to work even harder, but also be more patient and persistent. It has been seventeen years since my engagement in Loongson. I assume that we have gone through the intense period and arrived at the period for rapid development.
I'm convinced that when it comes to the 30th year of efforts in this project, we will have our own technological platform including CPU and operating system, which will bolster our information industry and the development of industry informatization and promote our information industry to march toward the medium and high-end level of the value chain.
