Beidou Navigation Services Shift from Asia Pacific to the Whole Globe
In December 27, 2012, with 14 satellites and 32 ground stations, China's Beidou Navigation System officially started to provide services to the Asia-Pacific region, and China's also became the third nation in the world that has mature satellite navigation system, after United States' GPS, and Russia's GLONASS.
Five years later, Beidou No.2 Satellite project won the National Science and Technology Progress Award, but Beidou system did not stop the pace of development. In 2017, China will launch 6 to 8 satellites to form the global network, comprehensively promote the development of Beidou No.3 System, and first provide basic services for countries along the belt and road.
It marks the beginning for Beidou to establish the global network, and provide services to the whole globe.
To develop the satellite navigation system is the choice China must take to meet needs of national defense security in the 1990s when it faced the changes in the world pattern. In 1994, China initiated the construction of Beidou No.1 System project. At the beginning of the 21st century, China launched two geostationary orbit Beidou satellites, marking that the Beidou No.1 System was built and put into use.
Since 2004, it took 8 years for Beidou No.2 System project to complete the launch of 5 geostationary orbit satellites, 5 inclined geosynchronous orbit satellites, and 4 round earth orbiting satellites to establish the network. Its positioning is more accurate than 10 meters, speed is more accurate than 0.2 m/s, timing is more accurate than 50 nanoseconds, and it can provide positioning, speed measurement, timing, wide area differential, and SMS services for users in the Asia-Pacific region.
When the Beidou No.2 project was constructed, China also launched the construction of Beidou global system in 2009, and planned to provide basic services for countries along the belt and road in 2018. In around 2020, there would be 35 satellites launched to complete the building of network, providing services for the whole globe.
At present, there four testing Beidou navigation satellites and 23 Beidou navigation satellites launched for Beidou Navigation Satellite System. Combined with the completed Beidou base enhancement system in the first phase, it can provide meter-level and submeter-level high-accuracy positioning services for the external world.
Now, the Beidou has formed a relatively complete Beidou industry system including basic products, application terminals, and running services, and is developing from the industry application to the public application.
In April 2017, the sales volume of Beidou navigation chip module has exceeded 30 million. The sales volume of high-accuracy board and antenna accounted for 30% and 90% respectively in terms of the domestic market shares, and are output to more than 70 countries and regions.
Via the demonstration of Beidou industry, satellite navigation has been deeply integrated into various industries of national economy. Driven by the first industry demonstration project, namely "demonstration project of key transport process monitoring and management", there are 4 million operating vehicles installed with the Beidou compatible terminal in China, forming the world's largest dynamic monitoring system of operating vehicles. In addition, the Beidou system has also been successfully applied in the field of homeland resources, disaster prevention and relief, agriculture, forestry, and water conservancy, surveying and mapping, emergency search and rescue and the field of mass consumption.
White Paper of China Satellite Navigation and Location Services Industry Development shows that the overall output value of China's satellite navigation industry in 2016 reached 211.8 billion yuan, and Beidou's contribution rate for the industry core output value reached 70%.
In May 24, 2017, the first Sino-Arab Beidou cooperation forum was successfully held in order to implement the project of Beidou in Arab proposed by President Xi Jinping. With this symbol, China and Arab will strengthen the cooperation of satellite navigation, and fully promote Beidou to cover Arab countries, serving their economic and social development.
Reporters learned that Beidou has been included into the task list of the national strategy "the belt and road", and the cooperation between Pakistan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and ASEAN, and the Arab League has been fully carried out.
