The 2nd Remote Sensing Application Technology Forum Held

During August 22 to 23, the 2nd Remote Sensing Application Technology Forum was held in Beijing. Hosted by Chinese Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography (CSGPC), organized by Beijing PIESAT Information Technology Co., Ltd. and co-organized by Huawei, the forum was focused on cross-border integration, empowering industries and the strategy of building a strong country through development of remote sensing. More than 800 top experts in remote sensing, business elites and representatives of industrial organizations and the government attended the forum. The China-developed remote sensing image processing software PIE6.0 was officially released at the forum.

As Song Chaozhi, president of the CSGPC, pointed out in his speech, at present, the remote sensing data is soaring, the industrial demand is rapidly growing, and the information technology is changing with each passing day. The application of remote sensing is faced with both a period of vigorous growth and many technical bottlenecks that need to be solved urgently, therefore it’s of great significance to hold the forum every year. China is accelerating its pace of building the world’s largest Earth observing system, and surveying and mapping technologies are deeply integrating into different industries. Meanwhile, the development of 5G technology and “satellite + AI” will greatly advance the integration of communications, navigation and remote sensing, the interpretation of on-orbit satellite images and intelligent remote sensing image processing, and promote the application of satellite staring imaging and dynamic target tracking. Every effort should be made to promote the application of China-developed remote sensing software and its industrialized application, cultivate the market atmosphere that advocates the use of domestic remote sensing software in industry-university-research institutes, and boost the innovation and development of Chinese remote sensing technologies. 

This forum gathered many leading experts and elites. Among them were 34 speakers represented by academicians Gong Jianya, Xu Jianmin and Pan Delu. They talked about the past and present development, international frontier, cross-border integration, industrial application, bottlenecks and intelligent future of remote sensing technology, so rich contents that covered main research directions, innovation hotspots, technical difficulties and industrial applications of remote sensing, making the forum a top-level academic feast that enabled one to “see the world in one session”.

Academician Gong Jianya pointed out in the forum that the functions of remote sensing satellites have been extended from general and detailed survey of natural resources and monitoring of resources, environment and land change to monitoring of trends and objectives. It is imperative to coordinate military, civilian and commercial satellite resources and truly build a real-time monitoring system, which will play an important role in the dynamic monitoring of marine environment, analysis of urban traffic conditions and dynamic target tracking in the future.

At present, China has 8 Fengyun series of meteorological satellites operating in orbit that forms a complete service observation system, making China one of the major powers including Europe and America in the field of meteorological satellites. In the speech of Academician Xu Jianmin, he expounded the principles and methods of observing the three-dimensional structure of clouds through convection on the cloud picture, and detailedly analyzed how the performance of clouds is affected by the heat and water circulation in atmosphere and the accompanying radiation and phase transition process.

Academician Pan Delu pointed out that smart ocean construction is a matter of major national strategies and national interests. Smart ocean is an intelligent marine technology revolution 4.0 that integrates information and physics, which is aimed to realize the inter-connectivity of marine environment, marine equipment, human activities and related principal information. Focus should be laid on full-time and full-space marine monitoring and development of Geo-stationary ocean color satellites and marine laser remote sensing satellites so as to build a spectrum image fusion application platform for multi-source remote sensing. 

Promoting the application of China-developed remote sensing software and its industrialized application is an important theme of this forum. In this forum, the new generation of China-made remote sensing image processing software PIE6.0 that owns completely independent intellectual property rights was released. The PIE6.0 realizes business whole-process real-time visualization, full-load precise image fusion, high-speed image processing in large areas, and intelligent and efficient target interpretation, and helps remote sensing cloud platforms achieve agile and on-demand cloud services that can be flexibly integrated with time and space information and perception through multi-dimensional data.

As representative of enterprises in the field of satellite application and surveying and mapping technologies, PIESAT was among the first batch that’s listed on the science and technology innovation board. It has received wide recognition of the society and the industry. In the forum, it signed strategic cooperation agreements with the National Ocean Technology Center (NOTC) of the Ministry of Natural Resources, China Academy of Ordnance Science, Beijing Research Institute of Telemetry, the 715th Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), and Zhuhai Orbita Aerospace Science & Technology Co., Ltd. to jointly strengthen cooperation, share eco-systems, and create a future through scientific and technological innovation! 

In 2018, China’s remote sensing satellite market was about 7.4 billion yuan, which is expected to reach 10.5 billion yuan by 2023. Experts estimate that if the functions of AI image recognition and dynamic target tracking and monitoring become reality, the value of remote sensing field will jump from the current tens of billions yuan to more than one trillion yuan. Chinese remote sensing practitioners will draw strength from the forum and join hands to explore the trillions-worth remote sensing industry and develop China into a world leader in remote sensing technologies.
