China Hosted the Publicizing Conference to Introduce China’s Theme of Space Cooperation in Vienna
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the United Nations’ Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. The Chinese delegation, which is participating in relevant commemorative activities in Vienna, held a publicizing conference, titled as China’s Space Cooperation: Build A Community of Shared Destiny and Benefit All Mankind, to introduce China’s theme of space cooperation. In this conference has demonstrated China’s achievements and international cooperation in key areas such as manned space flight, deep space exploration, BeiDou navigation, and space capacity build-up.
Ambassador Shi Zhongjun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, and representatives from other international organizations in Vienna, for example Tian Yulong, Secretary General of the the China National Space Administration, Yang Liwei, Director of CMSEO, and Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, attended the conference. Over 200 people participated in the conference, including envoys and diplomats from more than 60 countries to UN in Vienna, and a total of more than 200 representatives of UN and various space agencies of different countries also attended the meeting.
Shi Zhongjun clarified in his speech China’s concept of international cooperation on outer space that is open, equal, mutually-beneficial and inclusive, and emphasized that as outer space is a new frontier that will promote the well-being of all mankind, China is willing to uphold the concept of a community of shared human destiny and is committed to pushing forward the exploration of outer space through cooperation, to promoting common development through cooperation, and to advancing outer space governance through cooperation; and China is also committed to narrowing the “outer space gap” through cooperation, so that more countries, especially developing countries, can benefit from it. China will work with all countries in a more proactive and constructive manner to fulfill the vision of the outer space community of shared destiny.
Tian Yulong made it a focus to introduce China’s progress and cooperation in fields like deep space exploration, the Belt and Road Spatial Information Corridor, space infrastructure, etc.
Di Pippo made a speech to praise China’s great achievements in space development, and thanked China for its important contributions to the international community as a result of China’s cooperation in space. She in particular gave thanks to China for its provision of satellite remote sensing data to various countries and the opening of China’s Space Station. She also mentioned the strong support from the UN－SPIDER program and the Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific(China) (Affiliated to the United Nations), which have fully demonstrated China’s open stance in pursuing peaceful exploration and utilization of outer space through international cooperation. She said that the peaceful exploration and utilization of outer space are important driving forces and tools for the development of society and economy. All countries should strengthen cooperation in outer space to jointly address global challenges and serve to achieve the UN’s 2030 sustainable development goal.
On the conference, China and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs signed a declaration on the cooperation of the Belt and Road Spatial Information Corridor and the Supplementary Agreement for China’s Space Station Cooperation. The representative from China also donated models of Chinese Space Station and BeiDou-3 to the United Nations.
