3D Printing Technology Push China Aerospace Launch Capability Into a New Breakthrough

On May 9th, Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC) successfully launched Gaofen 5 satellite in the early morning. During this mission, several 3D printing equipment components were applied, marking the new breakthrough of aerospace launch capability in this satellite launch center.

The aerospace launch field is highly specialized, with plenty of non-standard components. Recently, as short cycle and emergency launching become the new demands for the construction of aerospace launch capability, the maintenance of non-standard components turns out to be the main bottleneck when improving the aerospace launch capability.

According to Dong Fuzhi, director of B Branch in TSLC Experiment and Technology Department, they overcame over 10 problems including drawing analysis, data modeling, data debugging, high-precision matching etc. using their advantage over data modeling and regarding 3D printing technology as the key in solving problems of non-standard components maintenance. Besides, they also made breakthrough in optical devices and front construction components.

“The device produced via 3D printing technology is highly-precise and speedy in production, making it fully meet the emergency demands and provide reliable support of the capability of the equipment emergency maintenance.” said Zhao Yuan, an engineer in optical branch.

It is understood that currently, the 3D printing technology is used not only for emergency processing of non-standard components, but for a kind of important research and development supporting tool in central project. The theoretical models of many projects are materialized through 3D printing technology, thus greatly lifting the speed of project research. Meanwhile, the data modeling team organized based on 3D printing technology also apply data modeling to many fields including research and development of simulation training equipment, project deduction etc., thus realizing the chain reaction of scientific innovation.

Zhang Lin, director of Science and Technology Department of the center, said that in recent years, Party Committee firmly establishes the idea of “Science and technology are the core fighting capacity”, and strongly encourages the research and application of cutting-edge technology, forming a brand new model of “demands driven, experts involved, Party protecting”, to build Green Channel for scientific research and innovation, making it the major motivation in the improving of aerospace launching capability.
